HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE?
Use the drop-down menu under “Partner” above to get some ideas, or send us your own ideas using our contact form.
ARE YOU A 501(C)(3) ORGANIZATION IN THE US?
Yes, we are registered as Solidarity Uganda, Inc. under tax-ID number 45-5492519. In Uganda, we are registered as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee.
IS SOLIDARITY UGANDA A FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATION?
Solidarity Uganda is not a faith-based organization. It does not discriminate its clientele, and has trained Protestants, Catholics, Muslims, Pentecostals, (these comprise the vast majority of Ugandans) and others, often in interfaith learning environments.
WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE ABOUT THE IDEA OF NONVIOLENT ACTION?
Several answers to common questions on nonviolence can be obtained through the website of our friends at the Albert Einstein Institution.
DO YOU HAVE A STANCE ON THE HOMOSEXUALITY BILL IN UGANDA?
A simple Google search of Uganda reveals countless articles and links related to this bill, so we receive a lot of questions on the topic. Many Ugandan activists feel the bill itself is a distraction from the roots of oppression in Uganda, where the rule of law is arbitrary anyway. Indeed, the Western world has become fascinated with the bill, some viciously advocating for it and some fighting against it. Our organization has an explicit policy not to discriminate on any basis, and our members have even offered safe shelter to Ugandans of the LGBT community, who typically have felt more endangered by social circumstances than legislative ones. We strive for inclusion and the rights of all people.
WHO CALLS THE SHOTS?
Solidarity Uganda is a consensus-driven organization, with various powers and responsibilities delegated to various stakeholders. Our board serves the purposes of broad strategizing, fundraising, capacity-building, and structural and advocacy support, also providing oversight to the directors and staff when necessary. Most decisions are made by a community of directors in conjunction with those doing the on-the-ground legwork.
DO YOU HAVE ANY PARTNERSHIPS?
We support and are supported by many faith communities, nonprofits, foundations, individuals, and groups in Uganda, Denmark, Netherlands, United States, and elsewhere. Solidarity Uganda knows that money donated by individuals goes the farthest in affecting social change!
